Metal brackets will be more visible than ceramic/clear brackets
Esthetics
Clear Aligners are almost invisable to those around you and can be removed at any time
Minimal patient compliance is required. Braces are permanently attached so patients don’t have to worry about misplacing them or interrupting their treatment
Compliance
High patient compliance needed
For best results, 20-22 hours a day is required
May cause irritation
from the brackets and/or wires
and will need more emergency office visits
comfort
Polished surfaces of aligners are generally more comfortable and cause less irritation
More difficult to floss and brush between the brackets, requiring extra effort to maintain good hygiene
Hygiene
Require less effort but still need to be brushed and flossed thoroughly
Recommend limiting hard, crunchy, and sticky foods
Diet Restrictions
No food limitations, temporary staining with foods like turmeric or coffee/teas
More frequent, recommend for every 4-6 weeks
&
More emergency visits for broken brackets and wire poking
Office Visits
Less frequent,
remote monitoring possible
keep your SMILE healthy
during orthodontic care
Brush Regularly
What to Do: Brush your teeth and appliances after every meal using a soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste
rinse with Mouthwash
What to Do: Use an antibacterial mouthwash to help kill bacteria and reduce plaque. It helps to clean the areas around your braces that might be hard to brush and keeps your breath fresh.
Floss DailY
What to Do: Use orthodontic floss threaders to remove food particles and plaque between teeth, preventing cavities and gum disease. A water flosser is also an excellent tool for anyone with dental appliances that make conventional flossing difficult.
AVOID Certain Food
What to Do: If you have fixed appliances in your mouth, avoid sticky, hard, and sugary foods. These can damage your appliance and increase the likelihood of plaque buildup between your teeth.
